New Delhi: SpiceJet finds itself in hot water after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a stern show-cause notice for blatantly charging fares above government-mandated caps on 15 key domestic routes.
The violations come at the worst possible time right when IndiGo’s A320neo grounding crisis has left passengers desperate for alternatives. IndiGo Solar Radiation Alert.
What Went Wrong?
Post-IndiGo meltdown, Ministry of Civil Aviation slapped emergency fare caps December 20:
- Up to 500km: ₹7,500 MAX
- 500-1,000km: ₹12,000 MAX
- 1,000-1,500km: ₹12,000 MAX
- Above 1,500km: ₹18,000 MAX
Contrary to the price caps, SpiceJet Mumbai-Delhi tickets screaming at ₹12,500 (cap: ₹9,800). Bengaluru-Chennai? ₹7,200 against ₹5,900 limit. This probably was the cause of trigger for DGCA who proactively jumped over and fined SpiceJet for this.
| Route | SpiceJet Price | DGCA Cap | OVERCHARGE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mumbai-Delhi | ₹12,500 | ₹9,800 | +27% 🔥 |
| Bengaluru-Chennai | ₹7,200 | ₹5,900 | +22% |
| Pune-Hyderabad | ₹6,800 | ₹5,200 | +31% |
| Kolkata-Goa | ₹14,200 | ₹12,000 | +18% |
3,200+ passengers hit since Dec 20. Screenshots from SpiceJet’s own website triggered DGCA’s lightning-fast probe.
DGCA Means Business
By December 24, Noon. SpiceJet better have answers, or face the music. Air India got similar notice. Pattern much? And what does SpiceJet has to say about this? “Dynamic pricing glitch.” Refunds promised within 7 days. Yeah, we’ve heard that before.
The Bigger Picture
SpiceJet’s been DGCA’s favorite target lately:
- Aug 2024: Enhanced surveillance after safety audits
- Jan 2024: ₹30 lakh fine (shared with Air India)
- 2022: 50% fleet grounding over incidents
For this incident alone, expect ₹5-10 lakh penalties if SpiceJet doesn’t deliver airtight response. DGCA’s on warpath after weeks of passenger hell. Full DGCA order drops Dec 24. We’ll break it down first.
